The Adams Report
by J.C. Adams

May 2001

Gorgeous early summer weather in Los Angeles makes it simply impossible to work in the office for very long these days. Luckily, a recent afternoon brought an invitation to visit the set of Getting It: At the Rave from Pacific Sun Entertainment and director Phil St. John. Sun-kissed hottie Billy Brandt stars in this first of three films for Pacific Sun alongside a passel of cutie-pie newcomers (Brian Archer, Bobby Bacon, Brock Hemsley, Bobby Golden, among others) and more established models like Mark Slade and Michael Brandon.

I made the trek to the North Hollywood sound stages where the film was being shot, accompanied by Men and Freshmen editor Austin Foxxe. We arrived to find Doug Lawrence (of the Adam Gay Video Directory and XXX Showcase) and Jeremy Spencer (of Adult Video News) observing the goings-on. Young Mr. Brandt wasn’t around when we arrived, but St. John and his crew were busily filming the video’s centerpiece orgy scene. A standard bar set was tricked up in psychedelic colors, and many of the young pups were sporting wildly colored outfits. Most of them were taking turns fucking Christopher Young, an insatiably hungry bottom who has finally managed to be cast in a film that cost more than a buck fifty. He’s got rough edges, to be sure, but the kid takes anything up his ass with nary a whimper. (Full disclosure: Mr. Young starred in my first ill-fated attempt to direct a porn film. Don’t ask.)

At one point, St. John directed one garishly attired top to start fucking Young and to “act butch.” An observer leaned over to me and whispered, “Not in that outfit!” As the set (and tempers) heated up during the complicated shoot, I headed off to the green room, where I greeted the newly arrived Brandt. He had pulled off his shirt and seemed to enjoy drawing plenty of (rather deserved) attention from everyone within his radius. Slade was sitting back, taking it easy, and told me that he had been paid and was waiting to be dismissed for the day. “What the hell are you waiting for?” I laughed. “Go home!”

But Slade was simply getting off his feet for a bit after a long day of shooting. I asked if the brouhaha over his switch from straight to gay films had died down. “More or less,” he told me. “But a lot of people on this side still don’t want to cast me because I worked in straight films. To be honest, I don’t get that [attitude] at all.” He’d still like to work on a straight film now and then, but the hetero producers and directors won’t even look at him. “My straight career is over,” he sighed. “And that’s too bad. I’m perfectly healthy, willing to work with these girls, and they’re willing to work with me, but I can’t get cast. I guess the answer is bisexual films.” I heartily agreed with Slade’s next conclusion: Most bisexual videos suck.

But there’s another problem to be overcome, Slade says. “There’s only a handful of women who work in bisexual films. I think [viewers] get tired of seeing the same women over and over again. But God bless ‘em, you know? They pretty much give up their own careers in straight film to do bi stuff. Lots of straight female stars want to do bi films, but if they have sex with a gay guy, straight [models] won’t go near them. That kind of homophobia is [shocking].”

Slade has penned an autobiographical script for a bisexual porn video, and asked me for advice on where to submit it. We talked for awhile about which porn studios churn out the best bi videos, and he promised that his, should it even be produced, will be authentic. “It won’t be one straight scene, then one gay scene, etc.,” he told me. “It’s authentically bisexual.”

Sounds good to me. We need more good bi videos. As I returned to the office, a fax serendipitously arrived from Stable Entertainment, announcing production on Goosed at First Sight!, the second sequel in their successful bi series. The first two installments were directed by Anthony Rose. Both videos (and Rose) picked up numerous nominations at the GayVN Awards, but their production did not go smoothly. Rose, Stable producer Donald von Wiedenman, and Stable co-founder Grant Wood (who has since left the company) clashed repeatedly, leading “Best Bisexual Director” Rose to announce during his acceptance speech at the past GayVN show that a wall should be erected in West Hollywood to “honor everyone who has worked for Stable Entertainment.” Let me tell you, that got the attention of a somewhat restless audience. He then apologized to his (understandably astounded) Goosed Again! stars Logan Reed and T.J. Hart, who were standing nearby waiting to present another award. Moments later, von Wiedenman accepted a trophy for “Best Bisexual Video” and shrugged off Rose’s comments.

In any case, von Wiedenman smartly chose bi-starlet Tina Tyler to direct Goosed at First Sight! Ms. Tyler’s a pal of mine, and a genuine sweetheart. She’s got some directing experience under her belt (she helmed the self-titled series Tina Tyler’s Favorites 1-3 over on the straight side). “We wanted a woman’s sensitivity,” von Wiedenman announced in the publicity fax. “Especially since this is a romantic comedy and is genuinely targeted at the true bisexual.” Keri Windsor, Asia Carrera, Kylie Ireland and T.J. Hart are among the female co-stars, while Blake Harper, Matt Bradshaw, Tuck Johnson, Jacob Hayes and Hans Ebson are the starring studs. “We’re really lucky to have that caliber of female talent,” Ms. Tyler told me. “I was thrilled and honored when they said they’d do it. None of them had a problem with appearing in a bi video. I think we’re finally breaking some barriers with this movie.” Legendary Nina Hartley has agreed to play a (non-sex) cameo as Mother Goose, a role filled by Chi Chi LaRue and Lana Luster in the first and second Goosed! videos, respectively.

As this column went to press, Falcon Studios called with some the news that The Other Side of Aspen V goes into production this autumn. But that’s not the really big news: “One of the guys in the new film is a cast member from the first Aspen film,” said Will M., Falcon’s Promotions Director. Will wouldn’t tell me who it was, the big tease. He also had some exciting news about a former Falcon exclusive who may be effecting a comeback very soon. I know who it is, but I’m not allowed to spill the beans. Yet. He and Falcon’s John Rutherford are talking specifics at the moment.

Another big star (in just about every sense of the word) may come out of retirement this year. He’s also a former Falcon stud, but this time around he’ll appear on-screen for director Blue Blake. “I’m working on him every day, trying to get him to agree to make one more movie,” jokes Blake. “Cross your fingers! What I’ve got planned for him is incredibly hot.”

Mr. Blake has just finished production on Tales from the Treehouse, and he won’t shut up about how proud he is of the final product. I was given an early review copy in the hopes of providing a quote for the box cover. Those situations are always dicey; what happens if you don’t like the film? I’m not gonna make something up just for the publicity kick of appearing on a box cover. Luckily, I liked Treehouse. A lot. Oh, and the gossip about the production of that film! Kids, I know behind-the-scenes stuff that would turn the National Enquirer on its ear. But I ain’t talking.
