As we head into the new year, talk in the porn biz inevitably turns to awards shows. With the demise of the Gay Erotic Video Awards a few years back, the mantle has pretty much been carried by the Adult Video News’ GayVN Awards. An invitation just arrived for this spring’s festivities, to be held Friday, March 22, 2002, at the Universal Hilton in North Hollywood. Mark your calendars.

I’m told by a little bird that the Men in Video Awards (formerly known as the “Probies”) will be back, but I’m not holding my breath. The last few shows were disastrous despite a valiant effort by producers to pull things together. On the plus side, the show did draw a large industry turnout. It’s always a kick when so many of us get together in the same room. (Read into that whatever you want!)

Also, Big Daddy Ferguson’s Gay Chicago magazine has been hosting a porn awards shindig for several years now on IML weekend. It’s usually quite a decadent party.

Hunky muscle-bound Billy Herrington finally had his cherry popped on-screen by none other than fellow muscle-head Tom Katt. The already-infamous coupling takes place in Conquered from All Worlds Video, which ought to be available any day now. By all accounts (on the record and off), filming went off without a hitch. Chi Chi LaRue was asked by AWV to supervise Herrington’s deflowering. “Honestly, the only problem was Billy’s accent,” she told me. “He’s a big Italian goombah from New York City, and he’s got that thick ‘Longuyland’ accent. He was supposed to be talking to Caesar, played by Blake Harper. Billy kept pronouncing it ‘See-zuh,’ so we had to work on that a bit.”

Elsewhere, Duke Miller recently sustained cuts, scrapes and bruises in a car accident. He was filming Blue Blake’s Muscle Penitentiary at the time, which was postponed until he recovered (he’s fine).

Mr. Blake recently revealed that a hunky construction worker was hammering away on his roof while he filmed inside. The sweaty stud struck up a conversation with Blake, who managed to convince him to film a quick JO scene! I’ll let you guess which scene it was…

In October, Kyle Bradford resurfaced in Vancouver as a cast member in a touring production of Ronnie Larsen’s Shooting Porn. He joined Vince Rockland, Scott Matthews, gossip columnist Billy Masters and actor/writer David Drake (The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me). If that seems like an odd flock of ducks, you’re right.

Blond beauty Lane Fuller has signed with agent David Forest and returned to XXX. He and boyfriend Kevin Williams have split, so expect to see lots of Lane in 2002. Speaking of gorgeous guys, be sure to check out the 2002 edition of the Adam Gay Video Directory. Falcon Studio’s baby-faced bodybuilder Matthew Rush graces the cover. (Here’s another tidbit of information: Rush’s new boyfriend is none other than Zak Spears…)

Moving on… apologies to director Thor Stephans. In my “Year in Porn” column I praised Jeff Palmer’s sexual performance in Palmer’s Lust and neglected to take note of the fact that Mr. Stephans directed the flick (he called to helpfully remind me of the omission). You can bet at least one scene from that video will end up a GayVN nominee in March.

When Mr. Stephans was finished lashing me with a wet noodle, he revealed that he was set to direct Billy Brandt’s third and final film in the three-picture deal he signed with Pacific Sun Entertainment. As I write this column in early December, Stephans and Pacific Sun were exploring the idea of heading to a tropical climate and bringing on Lane Fuller as a costar.

If you haven’t yet seen Sloth, the fourth in All Worlds Video’s Seven Deadly Sins series, take a look. Stephans also helmed that production--can you tell he’s having a very good year? Steve Cassidy burns up the screen with costar Lance Gear. “They were like two lions in a cage,” Mr. Stephans reveals. “I just let ‘em go for it. I was there to guide them, you don’t stand in the way of that kind of chemistry.” Part of their coupling includes a lengthy shower scene, and the director says that it was a last-minute addition to “stretch out the scene and take advantage of how hot they were together.” Stephans also wanted to further show off the beautiful private house they used as a location.

“I really hated the sloth theme at first,” he says. “But as I thought about it, I realized how much fun I could have with the idea. If you notice, all the information in the movie comes from the TV, further emphasizing the laziness of the characters. And I used a Steadicam that was moved very slowly and leisurely, with lots of dissolves. It came together really well.”

AWV’s Deadly Sins series has really picked up steam after a slow start and I’m impressed with their ambition--a rare commodity these days--in mounting it. It’s refreshing to find a porn studio attempting to do more than show pretty boys fucking in pretty places. Sometimes you just need a bit more meat.

“I’ve achieved one of my dreams,” Michael Brandon tells me. He’s now fifty-percent owner of his own production company, Monster Bang Productions. With IMD handling distribution and Raging Stallion Studios as a partner, Brandon is well-poised to heighten his profile in the industry. He’s also an exclusive now for Raging Stallion. “I did a lot of videos last year,” he joked (he ain’t kidding!), “and now I want to concentrate on making fewer videos, and making them the best they can be.”

Just the night before I’d reviewed Male.cum from AWV, an average video, but in it Brandon fucks a “straight” Marine and their sex is quite good. “They told me he was new, and that he might be a bit tight,” Brandon reveals. “I thought, ‘I’ve got a huge dick, why’d they put him with me?’ But then we started fucking, and I almost fell in! He had no trouble at all!”
